Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - PCOS
Primary defect is Hyperinsulinemia and is therefore an endocrine disorder.
Enlarged ovaries are a sign of PCOS but not the cause. Cause is Hyperinsulinemia and Insulin Resistance secondary to genetics.
PCOS is a common endocrinopathy in young women
PSOC is associated with significant metabolic and psychological comorbidity, with early impairment of vascular structure and low-grade chronic inflammation.
PCOS is one of the most common cause of female infertility.
Insulin Resistance and Hyperinsulinemia
Insulin controls the way your body processes glucose and uses it for energy. Insulin resistance (IR) means your body doesn't process insulin correctly, leading to high glucose level in your blood. Not all individuals with IR have an elevated glucose or diabetes, but IR can lead to diabetes.
Increased Insulin level in your blood - Hyperinsulinemia - causes higher level of male hormone (Testosterone) which contributes to other symptoms of PCOS.
